Representing victims of serious harm and death

Fiery Truck Crash on I-88 Another Deadly Reminder

Only 10 months ago, we were saddened to see an Illinois State Trooper killed by a dangerous truck driver on the highways around Chicago. Sadly, we can share the news that last night a Trooper was seriously injured in another fiery truck crash where a semi-tractor trailer struck the police and other vehicles on the side of the highway.

Fiery Truck Crash on I-88 at Eola Road

As reported by ABC News, the Illinois State Police said that a tollway employee and Trooper Douglas J. Balder were responding to a disabled semi-trailer on the right shoulder and lane of I-88 eastbound at Eola Road in Aurora at 10:00 p.m. on Monday night when another truck rammed into all three vehicles, all of which burst into flames. The tollway employee, Vincent Petrella, was killed while Trooper Balder was critically injured.

Two Horrendous Fiery Truck Crash Deaths

As was the case with Trooper James Sauter, the Illinois State Trooper injured in last night's crash was rear-ended by a big truck. The collision caused the police vehicle to burst into flames. The ABC News report indicates that the trooper was on fire as as he escaped from his squad car.

These two cases are cause for great alarm. As a member of the National Advisory Board of APITLA, I will be sure to raise my concerns about these two terrible crashes. That public servants dedicated to our safety should be killed or injured in such horrendous circumstances while they were working to keep us safe is completely unacceptable.

As a truck accident lawyer, I urge the trucking industry and its many stakeholders - drivers, trucking companies, shippers, brokers and insurance companies - to take steps now to reduce the risks of another fiery truck crash from happening again.
