New Program to Combat Driver Fatigue in the Trucking Industry

As a member of the National Advisory Board for APITLA, I was pleased to note that the trucking industry is taking steps to combat driver fatigue in the trucking industry. The North American Fatigue Management Program is a new effort by a collection truck industry organizations and government bodies in both the United States and Canada. This new program was launched earlier this month.

A New Website to Combat Driver Fatigue

Earlier this month, the American Transportation Research Institute launched a new website that aims to raise awareness, share information and provide guidance to truck drivers and trucking companies. The site includes a series of resources that are aimed at helping trucking companies establish management strategies to combat driver fatigue.

The North American Fatigue Management Program (NAFMP) offers training modules, online courses and educational materials for the following audiences:

  • Motor Carrier Executives and Managers
  • Safety Managers and Other Trainers
  • Dispatchers and Driver Managers
  • Commercial Drivers
  • Driver Spouses and Families
  • Freight Shippers and Receivers

Welcoming the Added Focus on Driver Fatigue

The Association of Plaintiff Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America, or APITLA, is an organization of truck accident lawyers who are committed to increasing road safety through awareness campaigns, improved legislation and holding dangerous truck drivers and companies accountable for their illegal actions. Having joined APITLA's National Advisory Board earlier this year, I am very pleased to see the trucking industry trying to tackle this very serious issue. Working together, we can effectively combat driver fatigue, and make the roads and highways across North America safer for everyone.
