Tracking Truck Safety Records on Your Phone

On Tuesday of this week, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration released a new app for mobile phones that will enable people to an easy to access to currently available online safety performance information for interstate truck and bus companies.

According to the FMCSA, the app is primarily expected to prove a particularly helpful tool for state and federal law enforcement personnel, along with insurers, brokers, freight-forwarders, and others people eager to review the USDOT registration and safety performance information of motor carriers.

The app does not require a user-account or a log-in. Upon submission of a request, the app reveals whether the federal operating status of the carrier is authorized while helping to expedite an “inspect/pass” decision by a certified commercial vehicle safety inspector.

The QCMobile app is available for free on both Android and iOS devices. Visit the Apple App Store or Google Play to download the FMCSA's QCMobile app.

Access to Safety Records: Will It Lead to Increased Safety?

As a truck accident attorney, I am particularly interested to see if encouraging the motoring public to access the safety records of commercial truck and bus drivers, along with the records of trucking companies and bus companies, leads to an increase in the safety record of these companies. Should they be available, I would welcome usage statistics from the FMCSA about this app. Such numbers might shed insight into the effectiveness of the app at increasing road safety.
