Truck Crash in Rockford, IL: Reminder of the Danger of Big Trucks
Last month, there was a terrible truck crash at Winnebago Corners in Rockford, Illinois. Although the investigation is still ongoing – and so it's difficult to know who was at fault – one thing is already very clear: the massive size of the big trucks make them very dangerous vehicles that must be closely regulated, well-maintained and safely operated at all times.
The Big Trucks Are Truly Massive
In the graphic above, which my office put together, it's clear to see just how truly massive the big trucks are. We input the height and weight specifications for a 2015 Kia Sedona, one of the biggest minivans available today. We compared one of the biggest passenger cars, the Kia Sedona, with the largest tractor-trailers allowed on the road today. When displayed as it is above, it's shocking that more is not being done to closely monitor and regulate this form of over-the-road shipping.
A Tragic Truck Crash in Rockford, IL
On April 3, 2015, there was a truck accident at a intersection known as Winnebago Corners, just west of Rockford, IL. According to news reports, a small passenger car was struck by a big truck as it (the car) crossed the intersection, heading north on Winnebago Road as it crossed Rte. 20. The driver and passenger in the car, two 16-year-old girls from Pecatonica, critically injured in the crash. The driver had to be air-lifted to a local hospital in Rockford.
The video footage of the truck crash shows the considerable damage that the passenger car, a Saturn, sustained in the collision. The massive size of the truck – as much as 80,000 lbs. – demolished the car, sending the driver to the hospital via emergency helicopter.
Regardless of who is at fault in this crash, it's clear that the big trucks are so big that they must be closely regulated and monitored to ensure their safe operation on our roads.
